50 Years Ago Today: Tom Seaver tosses gem to start Cy Young-winning season

On April 19, 1969, The Mets defeated the Cardinals, 2-1, in the first game a of two-game series in St. Louis.

Tom Seaver threw a complete game to earn his the first victory of his Cy Young Award-winning season. He

Seaver allowed a run on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He out-dueled future Hall-of-Famer Bob Gibson, who also threw a complete game. New York recorded both runs in the third inning thanks to RBI singles from Cleon Jones and Ed Kranepool.

The Mets will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their historic championship run all season long. The highlight of the year will be a weekend celebration, from June 28-30 vs. Atlanta when members of the team will return to Queens.
