Check It Out…a Bright Spot in the Mets Season!

Last night Ike Davis slugged two homers to give him 30 for the year. He is the first Met to reach that mark since Citi Field opened back in 2009.

In a season that has gone from nothing but positives to nothing but negatives, a few Mets players have a chance for some pretty cool personal milestones.  We’ve all been watching R.A. Dickey as he might win the Mets first Cy Young award since Dwight Gooden back in 1985.  We’ve all been watching Jason Bay’s quest for…a single.  David Wright needs two hits to tie Ed Kranepool for the franchise’s career hits record at 1,418, and so on…

But last night, something happened that probably less than 10% of Mets fans would have bet on midway through June.  Ike Davis blasted two home runs last night to give him 30 for the year.  That’s right, Ike Davis has 30 home runs.  On June 10th, Ike was hitting .167 with 5 HR and 14 RBI’s.

Since then, Davis has played in 90 games (79 starts) and look at these stats.  .266 BA 25 HR 67 RBI with an OPS of .907.  No one saw that coming.  I had made numerous proclamations to my friends that Ike would be the starting first baseman for the NL All-Star team this year.  Too bad he didn’t show up in the first half.

Early in the year when Ike was struggling so mightily, I was on the fence on whether or not to send him down to the minors to get his swing fixed.  Gun to my head, I would have said to keep him here because he plays good defense at first base.  But let’s not kid ourselves either, he was god awful in the field as well during that stretch.

In the last few weeks there have been stories written that the Mets brass is not happy with Ike and his extra curricular activities.  I loved his response to reporters when asked about him staying out late after games.  He said something along the lines of, ” I get outta here late and want to go out and get something to eat and watch a movie.  So I go to bed at 2 am.  But I don’t have a job like everyone else and don’t have to be up early.”

Exactly Ike, you don’t have a job that you need to be up at 6am for.  But you do have a job that requires you to hit left-handed pitchers better.  Please revert to your rookie season/early last season form where you were taking lefties the other way and getting on base.

Ike actually has an outside chance of reaching 100 RBI’s as well this season, but that would require runners actually on base.  If Ike gets the average up to .230 by the end of the season, I’d like to hear some people give the kid major props for turning this disastrous season around.
