Down On The Farm: MLB Draft Day Three

Back for the third and final day of the 2012 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft with rounds 16-40 to be selected today. As part of the new collective bargaining agreement the draft has been reduced from 50 rounds to 40 rounds beginning this season, which means 300 fewer ballplayers will be selected. For the majority of the remaining picks you can expect all teams to focus on college players, while many of the remaining high school players have been determines by the teams to be unsignable as they head to college.

 

Round 16

500) Myles Smith, RHP, Miami-Dade Community Coll., 6-1, 170 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Went 8-2 out of the bullpen for Miami-Dade Community College pitching 77 2/3 innings. He had a 2.78 ERA while allowing 43 runs, 24 earned (talk about shotty defense behind you) while striking out 67 and walking 21 batters.

Round 17

Stefan Sabol

530) Stefan Sabol, C, Orange Coast College, 6-0, 220 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Played in 27 games making the start in 26 while hitting .273 with four home runs and 24 RBI. Someone must know something about this kid as he was seventh on his team in hitting with only 88 at bats this season.

560) Paul Paez, LHP, Rio Hondo College, 5-9, 185 lbs.

Round 19

590) Tyler Vanderheiden, RHP, Samford, 6-2, 175 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Pitched to a 3.34 ERA in 29 appearances this season as a reliever with Division I Samford. A sidearm pitcher who racked up 29 2/3 innings while striking out 30 and walking 16, he held batters to a .245 batting average while going 1-1 and also picking up one save.

Round 20

620) Tim Peterson, RHP, Kentucky, 6-2, 195 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Pitched in 28 games all in relief for the Wildcats in the very difficult SEC. He accumulated 26 innings pitched with a 2.42 ERA he struck out 28 batters while walking only four, he also picked up three wins and a save out of the bullpen.

Round 21

650) Gary Ward, LHP, Bethel (TN), 6-1, 195 lbs.

Gary Ward

  • 2012 Stats: Pitched 83 innings in 14 games as a starter with Bethel (TN) of the NAIA. Went 8-1 on the mound while pitching to a 1.95 ERA. He was ranked #1in strikeouts per nine innings amongst all NAIA Division I schools with 13.23 K/9 and also third in total strikeouts with 122. He also ranked sixth in both hits allowed per nine innings with 5.64 as well as opponents batting average with a very impressive .175 batting average against.

680) Tejay Antone, RHP, Legacy High School (TX), 6-4, 205 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Currently signed to go to Texas Christian University after pitching to a 1.41 ERA in 39 2/3 innings this season at Legacy High School. Had a 2-1 record in nine games on the mound while striking out 46 and walking only 14. While he will be a pitcher he’s also got a solid bat hitting .377 with two home runs and 13 RBI at the plate, and also scored 20 runs.

710) Connor Baits, RHP, Point Loma High School (CA), 6-5, 210 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Pitched 37 1/3 innings this season at Point Loma High School. Had a 2.06 ERA while only going 1-4 on the hill, he had solid outings all season with the exception of his last which saw him allow seven earned runs in four innings pitched. He struck out a season-high 11 batters in five innings of work on March 21. He is currently signed to play for UC-San Diego next season.

770) Leon Byrd, 2B, Cypress Ranch High School (TX), 5-8, 165 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Currently committed to Rice after hitting .421 at Cypress Ranch with one home run and 21 RBI. He’s got some speed as well with 19 stolen bases, he walked 20 times and was hit by nine pitches en route to scoring a total of 36 runs this season.

800) Chris Shaw, 1B, Lexington High School, (MA), 6-3, 229 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: They drafted him as a first baseman??? He has two career no hitters in high school, just saying. His most recent no hitter came in early May in a game that saw him strike out 15 batters. He is currently committed to Boston College and is likely headed there for baseball, and he is also a two-sport athlete who plays hockey.

830) Zach Arnold, C, Franklin County High School (KY), 6-2, 175 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Was named to the All-State team and has committed to the University of Kentucky where he is likely going to end up. This season he hit .445 with 49 hits in 110 at bats. He hit nine doubles, three triples and two home runs with 16 RBI. As a catcher he had 15 stolen bases last year, and in terms of his defense he only had one error and three passed balls.

860) Jacob Marks, RHP, St. Clair Secondary School (Canada), 6-1, 160 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: He is currently committed to the University of Maine of the America East Conference. No other information found.

890) Austin Barr, C, Camas High School (WA), 6-2, 210 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: he is currently committed to Stanford University, and he’s heading there for the Fall unless the Mets give him a lot of money, a lot.

Dustin Cook

920) Dustin Cook, RHP, Hargrave High School (TX), 6-5, 210 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Pitched to a 5-1 record in six games while throwing 44 innings with a 3.66 ERA. He has held opponents to a .149 batting average while striking out 61 and walking 41. He is committed to attend the University of Houston, which is bound for the Big East in a few seasons.

950) Vance Vizcaino, SS, Wakefield High School (NC), 6-2, 200 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: He is currently committed to the University of Tennessee. No other information found.

Round 32

Jon Leroux

980) Jon Leroux, 1B,  Northeastern, 6-1, 210 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Hit .347 in 44 games with the Huskies this season while leading the team with 12 home runs and 50 RBI as well as 108 RBI. He struck out 35 times while walking 12 times at the plate, and finished the season with a .976 filing percentage behind the plate for a 23-28 squad this season.

Round 33

1010) Jared Price, RHP, Twin Valley High School (PA), 6-3, 205 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Pitched for the 18-7 Twin Valley High School team in eastern Pennsylvania, just an hour outside of Philadelphia. He is currently signed to be a Terrapin at the University of Maryland beginning this fall. No other information found.

1040) Mikey White, SS, Spain Park High School (AL), 6-1, 185 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Played for the 38-18 Spain Park High School team this past season. He is the seventh ranked shortstop among high school seniors in the country while also the third ranked player in the state of Alabama. He was a member of Team USA and took part in the Under Armour All-American Game. He is ranked 77th on ESPNs top 100 high school senior list.

1070) Bradley Markey, RHP, Santa Fe Community College (FL), 5-11, 185 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Was part of the 37-13 team at Santa Fe Community College and was the ace of the pitching staff tossing 95 innings on the year. He went 10-4 in 14 games with a 1.33 ERA while holding opponents to a .210 average and struck out 70 while walking 12 batters.

Round 36

1100) Donnie Walton, SS, Bishop Kelley High School (OK), 5-9, 165 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Played for the 21-8 Bishop Kelley Comets in Oklahoma. He is currently committed to Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma while also getting offers from Tennessee, Kansas, Baylor, Missouri and Arkansas.

1130) Benny Distefano, C, Lawrence E. Elkins High School (TX), 6-3, 215 lbs.

1160) Jeff Reynolds, 3B, Harvard, 5-10, 175 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Hit .333 in 162 at bats during his 42 games with the Crimson this season. He hit three home runs and 24 RBI, both of which led Harvard in 2012. He walked 13 times while striking out 18 times this season, while fielding a .930 fielding percentage with 13 errors at the hot corner.

  • 2012 Stats: Was part of the 25-7 that was headlined by Oakland Athletic’s first round draft pick Addison Russell. Both Russell and Ervin were All-Conference First Team.

1220) David Gonzalez, RHP, Gainesville High School (GA), 6-0, 204 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Signed to attend the University of Georgia to be a Bulldog beginning this fall.
