Goodbye Stache, Hello Beard?

on

With the Mets continuing to take a slow and measured approach towards free agency this winter, some interesting new broke on Sunday about a possible addition to the bullpen.

It was reported first by USA Today that former San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson worked out in California for Mets G.M. Sandy Alderson on Saturday. The hopes for Wilson was that he could prove that he is on his way back from Tommy John Surgery which he had this past April.

He was non tendered by the Giants which made him a free agent and its being reported that Wilson is deciding whether to close for a non-contender or fill a set-up role for a contender.

Wilson is a three-time All-Star. His 48 saves in 2010 led the majors and tied a Giants single-season record.

This would be a low risk-high reward kind of signing that teams like the Mets, dealing with a tight budget, can thrive on if they make the right decision.

Brian Wilson is a character to say the least and seems to be known more for his antics off the field than his solid pitching on it.

A hard throwing right hander out of LSU, Wilson was a major part of the Giants World Series win in 2010, including getting the final out in Game 5 against Texas.

The Mets Bullpen seems to be mainly Frank Francisco, coming off of off-season surgery and earning 6.5 million this season along with Bobby Parnell with a bunch of young guys and unknowns.

I think as Mets fan have plainly seen, Bobby Parnell is perfect for a 6th-7th inning role and does perform well when asked to get outs in the 8th and 9th. Plus the lack of experience from the other members of the Bullpen could put a lot of guys in more pressure packed situations.

The addition of Wilson would be great for both parties involved because not only do the Mets get a guy, when healthy, is a top notch closer, it allows both Parnell and Francisco move into rolls that are more suited for them.

The one thing that Wilson would get is a chance to prove his worth as a closer on a one year deal on a team with low expectations and could cash in next year if he is successful.

One thing that also could be in consideration is the fact that he is a very popular player among fans and is someone who bring some character to a Mets team that has lost some with Reyes and Dickey leaving the past two years.

If the Mets can bring him in, this is a move that would be welcomed with open arms by everyone involved and after saying goodbye to Keith’s mustache, we can say Hello to the Beard
