Mets & City Harvest Team Up To Fight Hunger

on

Before last nights game between the Mets and the Reds. Citibank, the Mets and the charity City Harvest teamed up with Mets alumni Jerry Koosman, Cleon Jones and Edgardo Alfonzo to package up food, like Sweet Potatoes to be taken to places where they can be used to feed the hungry in New York City.

The Mets and the City Harvest have worked together for several years and helped raise awareness of the hunger problems in New York and have worked to help not only shine a light on the problem, but help to solve it with food drives throughout the season.

From the City Harvest website, I wanted to share with you their vision and hope for the Charity and what exactly they have done and will hope to do in the future

Now serving New York City for 30 years, City Harvest is the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city’s hungry men, women, and children.

This year, City Harvest will collect more than 38 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to some 600 community food programs throughout New York City by a fleet of trucks and bikes. City Harvest helps feed the more than one million New Yorkers that face hunger each year.

City Harvest also addresses hunger’s underlying causes by supporting affordable access to nutritious food in low-income communities, educating individuals, families, and communities in the prevention of diet-related diseases, channeling a greater amount of local farm food into high-need areas, and enhancing the ability of our agency partners to feed hungry men, women, and children.

The Mets had volunteers team up with Koosman, Alfonzo and Jones outside of the Jackie Robinson rotunda throughout the afternoon and evening before the game started Friday to pack up Sweet Potatoes.

As someone who has not seen or known much about the charity prior to yesterday, I saw that all the people working together for a wonderful cause can bring hope to those less fortunate.

The Mets organization does so much to give back to the community, and its great to see that they do this kind of work for many different charities with missions all the same, to help people less fortunate than others.
