I never thought I’d say this, but thank goodness I was at the Yankee game tonight.
I didn’t have to suffer through the nine innings the Mets forced our fan nation to endure this evening. Nevertheless, tonight’s mess must be reviewed.
It as simply a 16-1 butt-whooping of the New York Mets at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies, battling their way into the playoff picture, fired on all cylinders in an all-out demolition of the Mets.
The Mets posted three hits, one being Mike Baxter’s third homer of the year, accounting for all of the Mets scoring in the game.
As for the question of the day: who on earth is Tyler Cloyd and what business does he have blistering the Mets? The Mets actually held him at bay in his first career on August 29. Tonight was a different story.
Not considered a top prospect in the Phillies system, Cloyd went 12-1 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year. He stifled the Mets in eight innings tonight, restricting them to three hits and that one Baxter home run. He struck out six in the process.
Jeremy Hefner got bounced from his start today without recording an out, but not before giving up seven runs on six hits. The other main culprit of pitching problems today was Jeurys Familia who fell apart in the ninth, allowing five runs on his own.
A large cast of pitcher kept the Phillies quiet today, and on the bright side the team managed to walk just four. Collin McHugh looked good in three innings, covering for Hefner. Robert Carson and Jenrry Mejia looked alright despite giving up five hits combined.
Nine relievers appeared in the game today, a franchise record…if you even want to have records kept for that.
To put it simply as you can see, it was all-out dysfunction at Citi Field today as Philadelphia dropped 16 runs on the Mets on 21 hits. That’s nine more runs/points than the Carolina Panthers scored tonight in their loss to the New York Giants.
Now 4-24 at Citi since the All-Star break, the Mets are continuing to find new ways to completely fail. Going forward, this team just needs to figure out how to not lose every day.
