Play the Tape: Nationals 5, Mets 1

on

Guys…all you had to do was prevent Gio Gonzalez from getting a “W”.  You didn’t even have to win outright!  Just score some runs and stick him with a no-decision!  Instead, the offense was once again non-existent and Gonzalez became the first pitcher in the MLB to win 19 games, which in the eyes of the Baseball Gods, will all but negate R.A. Dickey’s chances at a Cy Young victory.  Unless he comes back strong tomorrow and gets his 19th victory as well.  With the way the Nats have been hitting…I’m not too optimistic.

But, stranger things have happened!

Collin McHugh had his second not-so-good outing tonight, going only 4 innings and giving up 5 runs.  Gio Gonzalez ironically didn’t have his best stuff either, walking 5 batters.  As usual, the Mets couldn’t capitalize and the only run that was scored tonight was a solo homer by Scott Hairston.

The Mets hit another milestone tonight, scoring 3 runs or fewer in 11 straight home games at CitiField.  Party hats!!

Turning Point

The dropped pop-up by Kelly Shoppach that prolonged Kurt Suzuki’s at-bat, resulting in a home run.  Four batters later, Ryan Zimmerman hit a 2-run blast of his own.

Moment(s) of Note

You know you’ve hit Mets September baseball simply by the tone in Keith and Ron’s voices.  They were in rare form tonight, as they covered an extremely boring game, talking about everything from pre-game ballpark routines to the slog through the end of a failed season.  Even KB looked bored.

Cyclones’ manager and former Met Wally Backman was in the dugout tonight, trading whispers with Terry Collins.  Oh, to be a fly on THAT dugout wall.

Game Ball

I think I would have to say Ruben Tejada, for a couple of great defensive plays that helped McHugh out of a 3rd inning jam.

Next Game

R.A. Dickey (18-4, 2.64 ERA) will take the mound tomorrow in pursuit of HIS 19th win, and will go against Jordan Zimmermann (10-8, 2.99 ERA) in game 2 of this 3-game series between the Mets and Nationals.  First pitch at 7:10 pm EST.  The game can be seen on SNY and heard on WFAN660 AM. @MetsWFAN @dailystache @Meriwyn

Let’s go METS!!
