Post Game: Mets 3 Cubs 1

on

Gee was brilliant today tossing 8 innings only giving up a single run.

Dillon Gee pitched a great game today. His fastball had spectacular movement from the 1st inning on, and his curveball was working for him all game long to go with his changeup. Gee’s final line was 8IP, 7H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 4K. Gee will finish the 1st half of the season with a 4.10 ERA, which is not too bad for a back end starter.

The Mets opened the scoring in the 2nd with a Jordany Valdespin solo shot. Jordany has been raking as of late, and his average is up to .254. Ike Davis added a 2 run homer in 3rd. This was Ike’s 12th homer of the year, and he is now in a three-way tie for the team lead with Scott Hairston and Lucas Duda. Rueben Tejada also had a multi hit game.

Bobby Parnell came on to save the game in the 9th, and this is where things got interesting. Anthony Rizzo lead off the inning with a double. Kirk then caught a ball at the warning track, and Tejada made a spectacular grab in shallow left field to record the 2nd out. Parnell then struck out the final batter on a 101mph fastball on the outside corner. Tejada’s catch was the 2nd best play I have seen a Mets player make in the field this season, the first being Mike Baxter’s catch during the no-hitter. Parnell had some control issues today, but he was able to battle through them for the save.

The Mets are now 7 games over .500 and have a chance to go 8 over before the all-star break tomorrow. Jonathan Niese will take on Ryan Dempster tomorrow afternoon as the Mets will look to win the series against the Cubs. This will be Dempster’s first start from returning from the DL. Niese will look to finish off a strong first half from himself and this Mets team as a whole.
