Post Game: Nationals 5 – Mets 3

on

After an excellent start to the month of June, the Mets dropped their 3rd straight game, 2nd straight to the Nationals in Washington.  With the tight NL East, the Mets fell to 4th with a win by the Braves over the Marlins.

Jeremy Hefner made his 3rd start of the season, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) in 6 innings on 7 hits.  3 of the runs came in the 1st inning on a home run by Adam Laroche, his 9th of the year.

On the other side, Edwin Jackson pitched very well, going 7 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) and allowing just 3 hits.  Jackson did walk 4 in the game, but that has become expected of Jackson when he takes the hill.

The Mets recorded just 3 hits in the game which did include a hit from Ike Davis, who reached base 3 times in the game.

Not much good came out of the game tonight, except for the fact that Davis did record a hit, bringing his season average to a whopping .164, and did work out 2 walks.  Another positive was that Davis did not strike out, and the hit he did record was a fastball on the outside part of the plate which has been his issue all season.

Earlier today, Jason Bay was activated off the DL for the first time since April 23rd.  Bay did not play today, but there is a good chance we will see him in LF tomorrow with the afternoon game.  How Terry will adjust the lineup to fit in Bay is still unknown.  One likely scenario is to see Davis on the bench, Duda at 1B, Nieuwenhuis in RF, Torres in CF, and Bay in LF.  There is also speculation that Davis will play, and either Torres or Nieuwenhuis will sit on the bench to make way for Bay in LF.

The Mets will look to salvage at least 1 game from this series before taking on their cross town rivals in the weekend subway series.
