Sandy, Give Me the Lefty

on

And I am not talking about the great Duane Below.

I don’t mind this signing really, however a left handed reliever is a serious need for the Mets. The front office had an off season where they needed some holes filled. Those holes being a power hitting outfielder, outfield left handed hitter of the bench and shortstop. We will not talk about that last one out of respect for Wilmer Flores.

Unless I missed something I don’t recall anything written regarding a left handed reliever. Is that because we already have one? ONE. That isn’t going to cut it the Mets have tried that in the past and while it worked for the Mets it didn’t work in prolonging any of the guys challenged with its careers.

I was passing some time on Twitter this morning and Jayson Stark was posting his all-unemployed teams as he periodically does in the offseason and came across his relief team. Most of them were right handed and not surprising based on their pasts that they don’t have jobs.

Think K-rod, etc. I did notice that Phil Coke was out there who has pitched for the Tigers last year and in glancing at his stats very briefly enjoyed his best season in his 7 year career numbers wise. All while making a modest $1.9 million.

So why is this guy still hanging in the breeze? And more importantly why isn’t he on the Mets radar? He has pitched in New York while with the Yankees so he knows what to expect with the fan base and the media. But who knows with Sandy, maybe they are banking on someone in the minors to break in with the big league club this year.

While that last statement would be great I’d rather sign this guy who has experience and success at the big league level. That just helps out the younger guys we have even more.
