Series Preview: Mets vs. Rockies August 10th-13th

on

The First Place Mets take on the Colorado Rockies this week for a four game set at Citi Field. Yes on August 10th your New York Mets are in first place in the National League East. The Mets come home after a 4- 2 trip to the Sunshine State, which included stops in Miami and Tampa.

After winning the first 4 games the Mets fell in back to back one run games. They didn’t lose ground over the weekend as the Washington Nationals also lost two of three. That series happened to be against the Rockies, as Carlos Gonzalez who was rumored to be traded at many points during the season, has been on a roll lately. He capped off the weekend with two home runs off Nationals ace Max Scherzer. He currently is fifth in the National league with 25 home runs.

The offense is not the problem for the last place Rockies. They are dead last in team ERA, and frankly it’s not even close. They will send four guys to the hill that the average fan has never heard of. In game one Jon Gray will pitch. Any real baseball fan has heard of him as he is a top pitching prospects and was picked one pick after Kris Bryant (3rd overall) in the 2013 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut last week and will be making he second start of his career. The other three starters all have ERAs over 4.50 and aren’t very good. It looks like it will be the fifth straight season without even finishing third place in the NL West for the Rockies.
The Mets on the other hand have obviously one of the best rotations in baseball. After Jon Niese on Monday they will send out the big three of Harvey, DeGrom, and Syndergaard. DeGrom and Syndergaard are especially dominate at Citi Field, Syndergaard is 6-1, with a 1.57 ERA and 0.80 WHIP at home as opposed to 0-5, 5.01 ERA, 1.55 WHIP on the road. To show the difference in the pitching staffs, the Mets team WHIP is first in all of baseball, the Rockies, dead last.
Michael Cuddyer was activated today but won’t start tonight. Jose Reyes will be back as well as he was traded to Colorado just a few days before the deadline.
The Nationals start a west coast trip tonight against the Dodgers so it seems like a good time for the Mets to gain ground on a last place team in a park where they have more wins than any team outside of St. Louis.
