Tonights game did not lack headlines.

The New York Mets would hand the ball to their young stud Noah Syndergaard in the first of nineteen meetings against the Washington Nationals. The Nationals would send out former Cy Young winner, Max Scherzer, who is coming off a twenty strikeout game.

Tonights game also marked the return of former Met, Daniel Murphy’s after his departure via free agency. Murphy was the catalyst in last years run to the World Series and beloved by the fan base. Murphy would receive a standing ovation in his first trip to the plate and had a small video played pre-game by the Mets to honor him.

The Mets would also be without two major pieces of their lineup. Lucas Duda would sit out after receiving an injection. David Wright told manager Terry Collins that his back felt sore. Terry Collins decided to sit David as a pre-caution.

Going into tonights game, the Mets were on a four-game losing streak and 1 1/2 games behind the Nationals for the NL East lead.

Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto would drive in the only two runs of the game on solo homers. Addison Reed and Jeurys Familia would handle the relief work, sealing the win for Syndergaard.  “He’s fearless. He’s not afraid to do what he has to” said Terry Collins about Noah Syndergaard who improves to 4-2 (2.41 ERA) on the season.

The Mets improve to 22-16 and are now only 1/2 game out of the NL East division lead.

In other news…

David Wright sat out tonights game with a sore back. In his post-game interview, Terry Collins said that he has no real idea if this will keep David out for an extended period of time.

Matt Reynolds was inserted into the lineup with David Wright sitting out. Reynolds would go 0-3 in his major league debut.

Bartolo Colon (3-2, 3.53 ERA) goes against left-hander Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 1.93 ERA) on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. ET.
