This Date in Mets History: The Shot Heard ‘Round Shea

On this date in Mets’ history, 46 years ago, Tommie Agee belts two home runs, including a monster shot to the left-field upper deck off the Expos’ Larry Jaster, the only fair ball in Shea’s history to reach the upper deck.

The spot is later marked with Agee’s number No. 20. In his five years with the Mets, Agee hit .262 with 82 homers and 265 RBI. His best year was 1969, when hit hit 26 homers and drove in 76 runs. He also hit .357 in the league championship series, with two homers in 1969. He only had three hits in 18 at-bats in the World Series, but one was a homer.

  • Established a Mets season record for At bats in 1970 with 636. Broken by Felix Millan in 1973 with 638.
  • Established a Mets season record for Runs in 1969 with 97 and in 1970 with 107.
  • Established a Mets season record for Hits in 1970 with 182. Broken by Felix Millan in 1973 with 185.
  • Established a Mets season record for Stolen Bases in 1970 with 31. Broken by Lenny Randle in 1977 with 33.
  • Established a Mets season record for Caught Stealing in 1970 with 15. Broken by Lenny Randle in 1977 with 21.
  • Established a Mets season record for Strikeouts in 1969 with 137 and in 1970 with 156.
  • Established a Mets season record for Total Bases in 1970 with 298. Broken by Darryl Strawberry in 1987 with 310.
