Twenty Years of Putting it in the Books

on

Howie Rose has been a fixture in the Mets broadcasting world since he became a regular in 1995.

In fact, my favorite time was when he and Gary Cohen were paired together. After a Mets’ win, my dad and I would hustle to the car (which was never in the lot due to cost), and we made sure to be there in time for the happy recap, in which you got to hear the highlights of the game.

Whether it was Cohen or Rose calling the big play, you couldn’t lose.

Rose was born in Brooklyn and grew up a Mets, Jets and Islanders fan. He attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Bayside, Queens and graduated from Queens College in 1977.

After Cohen left for SNY, Rose has shared the booth with Tom McCarthy, who left for Phillies TV, Wayne Hagin and current partner Josh Lewin, who’s held the gig since the 2012 campaign.

Rose was the original prime-time host on WFAN when the station went all-sports in 1987, hosting the program until 1995. Rose occasionally worked games for Fox NHL Saturday in the mid-1990s, and now works for Fox Saturday Baseball. He has also called Long Island Blackbirds basketball and soccer.

Rose is also the television voice of the Islanders. Rose’s famous phrases include “Put it in the books!” after a Mets’ win, and also “There she goes!” when the Mets hit a home run.

Congratulations to Howie on his 20-year anniversary of Mets baseball. Raise your glass Mets fans and hope we get him for 20 more.
