Who We Hate More: The Yankees or the Phillies

on

Yesterday, I was blessed to be in the presence of the OTHER creator of the Daily Stache, Matthew Falkenbury, He came down to Long Island and we enjoyed a nice day of video games, Rangers’ hockey, food and sports talk.

One of the topics that was brought up during the Ranger game is my most hated teams. Since I went to school at SUNY Oneonta, which is the midpoint between Madison Square Garden and Buffalo, there was a big Rangers/Sabres rivalry.  Hence, it felt extra nice when Ryan Callahan beat them in overtime.

I decided to list my top ten hated teams in sports, and this is what I came up with:

  1. New York Yankees
  2. Philadelphia Phillies
  3. Philadelphia Flyers
  4. New England Patriots
  5. Miami Heat
  6. Buffalo Sabres
  7. New Jersey Devils
  8. Atlanta Braves
  9. Boston Celtics
  10. New York Giants

For me, the decision to choose the Yankees as my most hated team was an easy one. Probably a lot of the reason is the way I grew up, which was around a lot of Yankee fans. Each time the Yankees won another ring, it was almost as if the fans would laugh in Mets’ fans’ faces.

I have a perfect example. I am not sure what year this was, but Armando Benitez blew a game against the Braves on a weekend during the day that cost the Mets the season. While I am fuming at these developments, my mom’s cousin, who happens to be as arrogant a Yankee fan as there is, said that “now it’s time to watch a major league team.” I wanted to punch him. Even better? My father was coming to the family gathering late, so rather then walk into the house and watch, he listened in the car on the radio, because he knew he’d blow his gasket in such a situation.

As for the Phillies, I have been to their ballpark, which was quite impressive I must say. Last year, I went early in the season to watch them play the Brewers. It was early in the season, so I wore a sweatshirt over my t-shirt, but it ended up being a beautiful 80-degree day. Due to this, I took off the sweatshirt to reveal the Mets’ t-shirt underneath, and the heckling began. It actually made me laugh more than anything, because I probably deserved it. The Phillies ended up winning, and a bunch of female Philly fans surrounded me and were smacking my hat and stuff. It was kind of an assault, but I also kind of liked it.

Who’s your most hated teams? Let us know.

Honorable Mention: Miami Marlins, Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Dodgers
