Pre-Game: New York Mets (6-2) @ Philadelphia Phillies (3-5)

on

At 1:35 pm today, the Mets go for the series sweep of the Phillies.  That sounds soooooo yummy doesn’t it?  With some great starting pitching by Robert Allen Dickey and Jonathan Niese, and timely hitting, the Amazin’s are proving all the haters wrong early in the season.

On the mound today for the Mets will be “Sir-licks-a-lot” Mike Pelfrey (0-0 4.76 ERA) and Cole Hamels (0-1 5.06 ERA) for the Phillies.  I couldn’t come up with a terrible nickname for Cole, so I’ll just link you to Ted Berg’s AWESOME Embarrassing Photos of Cole Hamels page. This should suffice.

Today’s game can be heard on WFAN and seen on SNY.

Mets Starting Lineup

Tejada - Murphy - Wright - Davis - Hairston - Duda - Nieuwenhuis - Nickeas - Pelfrey

**Update – Jason Bay was in the original lineup, batting 5th in left field but was scratched after jamming his finger. Hairston who was originally in the lineup hitting sixth in right field moved to the other corner outfield spot while Duda who was supposed to have today off is now in the starting lineup.

Who’s Hot? David Wright – 10 for 17 (.588 BA) with a 1.578 OPS. David has an RBI in every game he’s played in this year.

Phillies Starting Lineup

Pierre - Victroino - Rollins - Pence - Wigginton - Nix - Ruiz - Orr - Hamels

Who’s Hot? Jimmy Rollins – Because he’s the only Phillie who’s off to a decent start. I guess 11 for 33 and 1 RBI is a hot start for your #3 hitter.

Pitching Matchup
Mike Pelfrey‘s first start of the year was a pretty standard Mike Pelfrey start.  Deep counts, tons of pitches, tons of contact, and a not so quality 5 2/3 innings.  Although Pelf equaled his career high with 8 k’s in the game, he was not nearly as effective as those 8 k’s look like.  Before we break out the brooms today, we must realize that Pelfrey’s career ERA at Citizens Bank Park is 8.60 in 8 career starts.

If you think Mike Pelfrey’s numbers in Philly stink, Cole Hamels‘ numbers against the Mets are pretty awful as well. Hamels is 3-10 with a 4.46 ERA lifetime against the Mets.  For someone who labeled the Mets as “choke artists”, it seems like he’s choked on a few himself when he stepped on the mound against the Metsies.
