Happy Father’s Day Pre-Game: Cincinnati Reds (37-27) @ New York Mets (35-31)

on

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there.  Without them, most of us would never have been shown the path towards loving the game of baseball.  Today the Mets look to fight off another weekend sweep.  This time and the hands of the Reds.  Johnny Cueto (7-3 2.46 ERA) will be squaring off against Chris Young (1-0 3.38 ERA) at Citi Field.

Last night the Mets we unable to take advantage of Homer Bailey not being able to spot his pitched early on, and fell to the Reds 4-1.  Although Bailey was not on his “A” game, the Mets we unable to capitalize on any of their early opportunities.   Jon Niese on the other hand made 1 bad pitch in the first inning (which wasn’t all that bad) that Jay Bruce deposited in the Pepsi Porch for a 3 run homer in the first inning.  That was all Bailey needed as he settled down and then handed the ball off to Aroldis Chapman for the easy save in the 9th inning.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM.  The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by Giants QB Eli Manning   (Let’s hope he doesn’t bury it in the dirt) to David Wright.  The game can be seen on SNY and heard on WFAN 660 AM.

Who’s HOT for the Mets?…Can you believe that it’s still Ike Davis?  Ike is 9 for his last 16 with a HR and 7 RBI’s.  Not to be pushed under the rug is David Wright.  He’s back at it again.  Davis is currently on a 7 game hitting streak that has pushed his average back up to .357.

Who’s HOT for the Reds?…2B Brandon Phillips is on fire right now.  Phillips has 12 his in his last 26 at bats, including 3 HR and 9 RBI.  On a side note #WILLIEHARRISFACE is 1 for his last 2.  That’s a .500 clip.

Pitching Matchup

On the bump for the Mets today will be right hander Chris Young (1-0 3.38 ERA).  After a shaky start to his last outing in Tampa, Young scattered 9 hits over 5 2/3 innings to collect his first win of the season.  (It must be nice to get some run support).  After that start, Young stated that he’s starting to get more life on his pitches and his command is getting better.  This is very important for someone who doesn’t exactly throw 95 mph.

For the Reds, righty Johnny Cueto (7-3 2.46 ERA) will be trying to earn his first career win against a Mets team who has absolutely owned him throughout his career.  In five career starts against the Mets, Cueto is 0-3 with a 6.58 ERA, his highest ERA against any team he has faced more than three times.  If Cueto does have one thing going for him today, it’s that he’s been spot-on in road games this year.  He’s allowed 2 runs or less in 6 of his 7 starts away from the Little League field known as Great American Ballpark.  In Cueto’s last start, he went the distance, allowing only 6 hits and one run against the Cleveland Indians.
