Keep Calm and Stay the Course Mets Fans

on

Well it was fun while it lasted right? I’m writing of course about the disillusion of the Mets staying in first place. As of right now, the Mets are still clinging on, but who are we kidding? We all knew it was going to go down like this eventually, right – though maybe not this quickly?

Baseball has three major pillars – offense, defense, and pitching. You can’t expect to win for an extended amount of time having only one of those pillars. The offense has been meager, and the defensive miscues by Flores and Murphy have made you want to pull your hair out over the last few weeks.

No, this team is not going to challenge for the NL East title. They’re not. Washington finally woke up and realized how good they are. Unfortunately the rest of the league also woke up and realized that the Mets’ best hitters aren’t on the lineup card.

The Mets need Wright and d’Arnaud to come back and come back strong. This team’s only chance at righting the ship has to come from getting healthy because no major pieces are going to get traded for mid-season. d’Arnaud needs to pick up where he left off, and Wright needs to stop acting like Mr. Glass. It’s that simple.

Wilmer Flores will get better at short (he can’t get worse, right), if Collins can resist using Tejada every other game. Meanwhile, Cuddyer should start hitting and maybe Granderson will start getting on base by something other than a walk now and then.

Look, this is not your usual Met fan giving up after a bad stretch, but I’m growing frustrated, as all Mets fans are, and rightfully so. We all need to face the reality that we all wanted to ignore as long as possible: this is an above average team, but division champion? No, I’m afraid not.

Mets fans listen! This team is still good, and should still compete for a WC spot when all is said and done. They are not a great team, but that doesn’t mean Mets fans should give up. I still think the team has yet to play their best baseball. I think we all got a little overzealous the first month with that winning streak, and that’s okay. So we don’t have a sizzling steak; this year we might have to settle for a really good burger.

About Darren Martino

I grew up a die hard Mets fan when everyone was jumping on the Yankees bandwagon. I blame the hype of Generation K. But I've stuck it out and am ready to reap the rewards. Let's Go Mets!!!! Follow me on twitter @dman_dm
