After a comeback flavored sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets are five games over .500 for the first time in…well seemingly forever.
And not only have they won substantially more than they have lost, but they look as if they could really stay in this thing to the end considering the MLB’s induction of a second Wild Card team. All of that with the 41-year-old Miquel Batista holding down a spot in the rotation!
So considering this team’s unexpected dosage of success, it has to be time to call in the big guns (Harvey, Wheeler, Familia) to supplement the playoff chase, right?
The answer to that is HELL NO!
Having spent the last couple of days listening to Mike Francessa on the WFAN airwaves the call for Matt Harvey’s promotion is distinct. And it is understandable. Considering the Mets rotation and Harvey’s ability, he would probably be the number three or four starter on this squad.
I’m sure Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins are equally as tempted as all of us fans, but this mirage of success cannot be the sole justification to rush along the development of the future of the franchise.
The young trio of arms will get to Queens when they get there. All three of them seem to be progressing at a very solid rate; all looking as if late season call-ups are within reason. To throw a wrench in those plans by over-salivating about a successful April/May would be disastrous.
Maybe they would work out right now, but it is not a chance the Mets are in a position to take. A future rotation of Wheeler, Harvey, Familia, Niese, and Gee is one the Mets have to ensure happens. If that means waiting till even 2014, then wait till 2014. It will be worth it.
And I will end on this final note—if they DO get the call up it had better be as STARTERS. There is no bigger mistake than putting a young arm through the Joba Chamberlain chain saw.
