Mets Connections Outside of Baseball

on

The Mets have signed Tim Tebow to a Minor League Contract. I’m hoping he’s not just insurance in case they fail to resign Yoenis Cespedes.

It got me thinking about other New York Mets that had careers or made a name in something other than Baseball.

Imagine the pickup football games the 1980’s Mets could have had with Troy Aikman, who was drafted by the Mets in 1985, throwing passes to former Penn State and NFL standout DJ Dozier. If Troy was unable to get a first down he would have to punt and who better to take care of that then former Florida A&M Kicker Vince Coleman.

How about Basketball? You have former St Johns center Terry Bross along with onetime Met coaches Bob Gibson and Frank Howard. Before baseball, Gibson played a couple of seasons with the Harlem Globetrotters and Howard was an All American at Ohio State.

As far as Hockey, you have Tom Glavine who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings as well as former grave digger Richie Hebner who was a standout High School player and almost signed with the Boston Bruins. But alas, his hockey career was buried.

So we’ll have to wait and see if Tim Tebow becomes a New York Mets All Star or becomes a subject of a column just like this in the future. In the meantime, I have to go see my Doctor George ‘Doc’ Medich as well as my Financial Advisor Lenny Dystra.
