Pitching Depth is Never Bad

on

As rumors continue to circulate about the Mets looking to deal one of their starting pitchers (mainly Dillon Gee), I doubt it’d be the end of the world if the Mets made no move whatsoever.

Look at last year. The Mets were knocked for a loop when Matt Harvey went down for the season and had Tommy John Surgery, and they dipped into the minors for reinforcements. This year, the reinforcement may start the season as the long man out of the bullpen.

The guy I keep thinking about is Wade Davis, who became a dominant reliever as part of the Royals’ path to the World Series last season. Now, I am not saying Gee could be that good, but dealing him for 10 cents on the dollar isn’t the best plan, in my opinion.

Think of Carlos Torres’ value. Now if you have two guys who can give you 2-3 innings, that helps you rest your starters and also limit the appearances of your late-inning relievers. Guys like Familia and Mejia will be much better if they’re fresh.

Unless the right trade comes along, I say keep Gee. Go into the season with a rotation of Harvey, DeGrom, Wheeler, Niese and Colon. Keep Gee in the pen. You can never have too many arms.
