The Mets came back to win 5-3 against the Miami Marlins tonight. Jeremy Hefner threw 6 innings of two run ball en route to the victory. Manny Acosta added a scoreless inning of relief while Frank Francisco came on in the ninth and earned his 23rd save of the season.
The Mets had difficulty with Josh Johnson until Josh Thole earned and RBI on a ground ball to tie the score 1-1. Johnson shut down the for 8 innings until the Marlins bullpen entered the game in the 9th.
The hero of tonight’s game was Kelly Shoppach, who came on to pinch hit with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the ninth. Shoppach cleared the bases with a double and he then advanced to third on an error.Shoppach has exceeded my expectations since joining the Mets, as he is handling the pitching staff quitequell and he has raised his batting average 15 points up to .265. I firmly believe he should be resigned heading into 2013.
The Mets have been playing much better lately. A strong finish this season would be a nice confidence booster heading into next season. Also, things will start to get interesting with the September callups, so overall the team is still worth watching in my eyes.
Tomorrow the Mets take on the Marlins with Chris Young facing Mark Buehrle. Game time is 1:10PM EST.
