Pre-Game: Colorado Rockies (49-73) @ New York Mets (57-67)

on

Last night was just another example of the ineptitude of the 2012 New York Mets.  Rookie phenom Matt Harvey went out there and mowed the Rockies down over 6 innings with 9 strikeouts.  He left the game tied at one and within two pitches after the 7th inning started, the lead was gone.  Ramon Ramirez coughed a gopher ball and that was that.  Another wasted effort.  The story is growing tiresome and frankly so is Frank Francisco.  After another appearance in which he allows multiple hits, walks and runs, Frank proceeded to trash the dugout and cower into the locker room after his outing was over.

Now to today’s game…With Johan Santana being shut down for the rest of the season, Collin McHugh (7-9 2.88 ERA between AA and AAA) will be called up and makes his Major League debut this afternoon against Tyler Chatwood (3-3 5.46 ERA).

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:10 pm.  The game can be seen on SNY and heard on WFAN.  If you want to head out to the game today, the Mets a running a special.  For every adult ticket purchased, three kids aged 12 and under get in free.  So take advantage of one of the last games of the summer and head out to Citi Field.

Pitching Matchup

Colin McHugh will make his Major League debut for the Mets today. This year at AA Binghamton, he went  5-5 with a 2.41 ERA.  He was then called up to AAA and went 2-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts.  In his last two outings he  allowed one run in 12 2/3 innings.  So with McHugh starting today, this will make him the 4th rookie to make a start for the Mets.  That’s never a good sign.

Tyler Chatwood (3-3 5.46 ERA) gets the start this afternoon for the Rockies.  In his last outing, Chatwood was lit up for six runs and nine hits over four innings of a 6-5 loss to Miami on Saturday.  In Chatwood’s only start against the Mets, he was great.   He threw seven shutout innings for the Angels back in June 2011.
