This afternoon at 4:05, the Mets go for the series win at Petco Park. After last night’s 6-2 victory over the Padres, the Mets seem as if they may have broken out of their second half funk. With a win today, the Amazin’s would finish off this 11-game west coast trip at 7-4. A mark no one would have thought possible 2 weeks ago.
Jeremy Hefner put forth another solid outing last night. He allowed only one run on five hits with two strikeouts in six innings. Mike Baxter had a bizarre 5 for 5 night. That is he walked in all five plate appearances. Murph was 4 for 4, and Ruben Tejada was 2 for 5 .
The Mets have gotten 5 straight strong starting pitching performances, and today, rookie phenom Matt Harvey (1-1 1.59 ERA) looks for his 3 straight outstanding start. Harvey will face off against Staten Island native Jason Marquis (6-10 5.54 ERA), who has pitched well since joining the Padres earlier this season.

Pitching Matchup
Matt Harvey (1-1 1.59 ERA) gets his first crack at the pitcher’s haven known as Petco Park. Facing a Padres team that doesn’t have much offense, you’d expect some impressive numbers out of Matt today. In his last start against the Giants, he pitched well again, allowing 2 earned runs in 6 innings with 7 strikeouts. Against a much better lineup last week, Harvey used his changeup a lot more. With a bigger ballpark, I expect to see Rob Johnson put down the number 1 a lot more often.
Jason Marquis (6-10 5.54 ERA overall, (4-6, 4.08 with the Padres)) is 6-7 with a 4.58 ERA against the Mets in his career. Jason’s last outing was not a very good one. He gave up 7 runs at Cincinnati in 6 1/3 innings along with 3 homers. He had won his last three starts. In his lat 8 starts against the Met Marquis is 1-4 with a 6.02 ERA,
