The Mets Need David Wright

on

Despite what all the naysayers are saying in the wake of David Wright’s latest injury snafu (a sore back), he still remains a valuable part of the 2015 Mets and their future.

I understand the frustration of the fans, but Wright is still the best pure hitter on the team, bar none. Look at what’s been over there since he went down. Eric Campbell couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, and Daniel Murphy is our everyday second basement that’s moved to third. Notice how I didn’t use the world natural when I referred to Murph.

The thought of a young, up-and-coming kid is very sexy for fans to dream about. Already, we’ve had Harvey come through our system, and he’s just a rock star. Jacob deGrom is fresh off a rookie of the year campaign, and Noah “Thor” Syndergaard and Steven “Let’s Go” Matz are waiting in the wings at Triple-A. With other guys like Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto not terribly far away, the future appears bright.

In New York, you can always dream of the future, but we live in the now. The bottom line is that David Wright is this team’s leader and sets an example for the younger players to follow. It’s not like he’s lazy or doesn’t give his all, but often he’s been criticized for doing too much. It’s a darn shame, too, as Wright was looking excellent early on, hitting the ball with authority to all fields. With him, and Travid d’Arnaud clicking, things were looking good. When they both went down, the Mets could have folded like a cheap suit, but they didn’t. Quite frankly, they’re just trying to ride out the storm.

Dilson Herrera, who the Mets got along with Vic Black (also injured) for Marlon Byrd and John Buck, has shown flashes and has proven he’s capable of holding the fort at second while Wright is out. Murphy seems like he prefers third to second, but he’s not exactly a defensive juggernaut at the hot corner. He’s in there for his bat.

Don’t write off David though. If this team is due for something special in 2015, and even the next couple years ahead, he’s going to need to be a valuable piece.
