WATCH: Dom Smith interviews idol Barry Bonds

It was a dream come true for Mets’ first baseman/outfielder Dominic Smith who had the chance to interview his idol Barry Bonds on Instagram live yesterday as part of MLB’s Black History Month celebration.

Smith claims that he may have never gone pro if not for his idol. The two lefties sat down for a digital interview as fans watched along.

RAPID REACTION: I had the opportunity to watch much of this, and it was quite the pleasure to see two guys who love the game so much going back and forth. To say Bonds was a force at the plate would be an understatement. Teams would literally walk him with the bases loaded and give up a run because they were afraid of his lightning swing and devastating impact. Now, it’s unfair to try to compare Smith to Bonds as Bonds is one of the best to ever put on a jersey, but Smith certainly had a breakout year last season. Right now, it would seem as if Smith is going to be the left fielder the majority of the time against right handed pitching, possibly giving up at bats against lefties to the likes of Kevin Pillar and/or Albert Almora Jr. The Mets most certainly benefit to a last-second agreement between the players and owners to reinstall the Designated Hitter so Pete Alonso can DH and Smith can play his natural first base.
