Round 10
295) Kelly Secrest, LHP, UNC-Wilmington, 6-0, 215 lbs.
- 2014 Stats: Well we have our first lock to sign with the Mets, unless he doesn’t want to play baseball as Secrest is the first college senior to be taken by the team in its last pick of Day 2 of the draft. Secrest is no doubt the result of the same scout who was in charge of picking Katz in the previous round as the pair both play in the Colonial Athletic Association, which primarily spans the commonwealth states along the Eastern seaboard…and Hofstra and Northeastern for some reason (but that’s for another day). Secrest is the definition of a workhorse as he appeared in 114 games during his career to set a new school and conference record, during his senior year he picked up eight saves and also pitched to a 3.57 ERA while tossing 53 innings, all in relief as a senior. He projects as a guy who is going to be a reliever and we could see him in the majors as soon as September 2015, but more likely in 2016.
With Secrest, the second day of the draft ends. We’ll be back tomorrow with a recap of the third day of Mets draft coverage!
