Today is December 23, and for Seinfeld fans, that means it’s Festivus. Happy holidays everyone! For a full explanation of the holiday, see below.
“Out of that, a new holiday was born. A Festivus for the rest of us.”
The first part of Festivus is to air your grievances, so, since us Mets’ fans love to whine, here’re some complaints to be given towards Mets’ management this holiday season.
- Make a splash. It’s been 16 years since the Mets last made the impact trade to turn the franchise around, and that was when they acquired Mike Piazza. Troy Tulowitzki is out there, and if you play your cards right, you might be able to get him for less than you might think due to the outrageous contract and concerns surrounding injury.
- Training staff. Remember when Carlos Beltran sought out a second opinion on his injury because he didn’t trust the Mets’ doctors? How about developing a plan that’s sound and sticking to it. Obviously, the most important part of having a successful season is keeping all of the players on the field.
- FM Radio. How can you be a professional sports team and not be on FM radio? The signal for WOR is crappy by my house, and I live on Long Island. Pick up the phone and call ESPN radio. Get the job done.
- Stop being cheap. This off season has been a step in the right direction, but sometimes you need to take a risk to reap the rewards. The perfect example of this is Jung-Ho Kang. I didn’t think a $5 million posting fee was unreasonable.
- Pick a lineup and stick with it. This is an indictment on Terry Collins. Since he’s been manager of the Mets, it’s been very commonplace for him to have like 10 starting lineups in the first two months. Evaluate in spring training, make your decisions and stick with them. The game of musical chairs wasn’t intended for baseball.
- Retire Mike Piazza/Keith Hernandez’s numbers. These guys are iconic in the history of the franchise. It’s enough of an injustice that Piazza is not in the hall of fame, but when his own team won’t put his number on the wall, it’s an insult. Keith doesn’t need an explanation. His mustache was enough of a reason to honor him.
