Baseball is finally here for our Mets, and call it premature, but I’m liking what I’m seeing. Especially out of Colon. He’s been masterful in his pitching duel against Max Scherzer, who was very good himself.
Colon, who was named the Opening Day starter, wasn’t a hit with fans who wanted to see Harvey or deGrom start. But, Terry Collins wanted to go with the veteran Colon. And he didn’t disappoint. Colon pitched 6 strong innings, surrendered 3 hits, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO, 1 HR.
He did surrender a home run to Harper which was the only run of the game for the Nats, was Colons only hiccup. The one thing I didn’t like had nothing to do with Colon himself. It had to do with Murphy. Early in the first inning Murph botched an otherwise routine ground ball. Second base is going to be key along with shortstop defensively and it still looks like Murph doesn’t have a handle on second base.
Just something that the Mets are going to have to address at some point. For me, Colons (1-0) start combined with good hitting from Duda (2 for 4, 2 RBIs) and Travis d’Arnaud (2 for 4, 1 RBI) were instrumental in Colons Opening Day Start. As it was, it only took three runs to secure the Mets with a 3-1 win over the Nats on their home turf.
