Jacob deGrom Dominates Dodgers

on

“He’s really good. He got us to where we wanted him to” said Terry Collins about Jacob deGrom post-game after a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers.

Today’s game featured a pitching match between the top two pitchers leading the National League in ERA – Zack Greinke (1.30 ERA) & Jacob deGrom (2.18 ERA).

Jacob retired his first eight batters, before giving up a 2-out single to none other than Zack Greinke himself. But today, deGrom would throw the better game between the two stud pitchers. The final line on Jacob deGrom today: 7.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K.

Mets struck first in the game. Jacob deGrom reached on an infielder’s choice scoring Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Bottom of the sixth, with the bases loaded and Michael Conforto at the plate, Conforto was HBP, scoring Daniel Murphy. Conforto getting HBP marked his third straight game with an RBI.

Jacob deGrom threw eight scoreless innings before being replaced by Jeurys Familia in the 9th. This is where the game went bad for the Mets quick and in a hurry. Justin Turner doubled on a line drive to center field, scoring Adrian Gonzalez. Later on in the inning, Yasmani Grandal singled to left field, scoring Carl Crawford and tying the game at two runs apiece.

Mets would fail to convert a run in the bottom of the ninth and go into extra innings. Jenrry Mejia saw action to open the tenth.

In the bottom of the tenth inning, Curtis Granderson opened the inning by legging a single into a double. Ruben Tejada hit what was thought to be an infield pop up, but Adrian Gonzalez just missed it but still managed to get Tejada at first. Granderson, didn’t advance to third from second since it seemed that Gonzalez would have made the play.

Juan Uribe would drive in the game-winning run by cranking a single off the center field wall and scoring Granderson. Uribe, in only his second day as a Met, has already significantly contributed to the team – both offensively and defensively.

For a moment, there were flashes of the rubber match against the Nationals in which the Mets blew the game late and suffered a loss. “It was big. To come back and win it, I think that’s going to lift their spirits next week.” Said Terry Collins of the Mets win this afternoon.

Mets are now only two games back of the NL East lead with the Nationals losing today. Mets are off tomorrow and pick up a series against the San Diego Padres at home starting on Tuesday 7/28.
