As if this week didn’t have enough storylines: Wilmer Flores trade, the non-trade, teary eyes, botched six run lead, and of course, the Cespedes trade. But all of those things play second fiddle to Lucas Duda.
“Listen, we’ve got to start producing some runs, or we’ve got to find somebody else,” Collins told Duda. Duda certainly got the message.
To put things into perspective for fans: Duda has nine hits in his least seven games and eight of them have been homers. The other was a tie-breaking double in the eighth to propel the Mets to a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals. Duda homered twice in this afternoon’s game and drove in all three of the Mets runs.
Jacob deGrom struggled in the first inning of the game, giving up two-runs on 31 pitches. Jacob battled back and went six innings and totaled 117 pitches. “I didn’t have my best stuff tonight and they battled me pretty well — fouled off a bunch of pitches.” said deGrom. Jacob battled back after the rocky start leaving, hopefully, himself pleased.
Terry Collins gave Jeurys Familia another vote of confidence. After blowing his last three save opportunities, Familia entered the game with a save opportunity in the ninth-inning. Familia finished off the Nationals with a ten pitch inning, sealing the deal for the Mets.
The Mets (54-50) are now only one game behind the Washington Nationals (54-48) in the division race. But the Mets still remain two games back in the loss column.
Noah Syndergaard (5-5, 2.70 ERA) takes the mound tomorrow night against right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (8-6, 3.36) on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.
