Can the Mets Pip Washington to Top Spot in the National League East?

on

The New York Mets are one of Major League Baseball’s most famous franchises but success and dominance have avoided them in recent times. While they were able to claim the National League East title in 2015, they haven’t gone on to win the World Series since 1986; far too long for such a prestigious and historic team.

However, that could all change this year. The Mets are looking good. With just over half of the season gone, they are sitting second in the National League East and will be ready to try and topple the Washington Nationals in the coming weeks and months. After 82 games, New York have recorded 45 wins – giving the franchise an impressive win percentage of .549.

At the time of writing, 32Red Canada are offering 3/1 on the New York Mets to climb above the Washington Nationals and win the division this season – and with half of the season remaining, everything is still to play for. The Mets have been formidable on their home patch this year, winning 24 of their 40 fixtures but their away form has been sporadic at best. Many believed the Mets could be primary contenders this year, as profiled by You Tube channel MVPFLF back in January.

If they genuinely believe they can win the World Series, they simply have to improve on the road. Their current 21-21 record isn’t terrible but it isn’t championship-winning form. Just look at the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants for example. The Cubs have a 26-19 record on the road whilst San Francisco have won 28 of their 44 matches. The Mets have plenty of work to do if they are to challenge these two franchises…

On Friday, the Mets will face the Nationals in another of the divisional mini-series contests and baseball fans all over the United States will be keeping a close eye on this particular battle. Should New York get the better of their divisional rivals, it could give them the impetus to push on and try to close the gap at the top of the East. After all, they are only a handful of wins behind and the Mets are more than capable of making up the ground.

And New York will be looking to take inspiration from their recent 4-0 whitewash of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are widely regarded as THE team to beat this year but the Mets put them to the sword at the start of July. In fact, New York defeated them by an accumulative total of 32-11; a score that shows just how dominant the Mets were from start to finish.

If the Mets can maintain this impressive run of form throughout the second half of the campaign, they could be regarded as World Series contenders. As of July 5, 32Red and 188Bet are pricing the Mets at 18/1 to go on and win baseball’s main title; can they do it? If nothing else, it would be foolish to rule them out as they have a very talented and deep roster.

Yoenis Cespedes will be crucial to their chances of glory this season. So far, he has been the Mets’ main man on offense – as shown in their recent victory over the Miami Marlins – and he has more runs and a better slugger percentage than any of his team mates. On his day, Cespedes must surely rank as one of the best players in Major League Baseball and the New York star will be looking to inspire his franchise to glory in the coming months. They are well capable, they just need leadership and charisma; and Cespedes has that in abundance.

So, can the New York Mets win the World Series? In a word, yes. However, they should focus their primary attention on the Washington Nationals as they look to defend their divisional title. Another National League East crown would give the Mets a fantastic opportunity to build a dynasty era at the franchise and who knows, a World Series victory could follow suit at the end of the season…
