Stop Getting Emotional: The Time is Now to Trade Wilmer Flores

on

I know, you’re already mad at me, but Wilmer Flores is more valuable as a trade chip than anything else for the New York Mets. Historically, Wilmer has mashed lefties, but he has not found an everyday spot. This year, he’s finally getting increased visibility, but that’s mostly due to injuries and a lack of viable alternatives, but he’s been one of the few Mets who haven’t disappointed.

Sure, the last time we had this conversation, Wilmer Flores was almost shipped to Milwaukee with Zack Wheeler in a deal centered around Carlos Gomez. Thank goodness that never came to pass. Now, both Wilmer and Zack may be on the move again, especially if the Mets decide not to trade ace Jacob DeGrom or fireballer Noah Syndergaard.

Clutch is not something that can be taught, and Wilmer’s brightest moments have come when the game’s on the line. Who can forget his game winner after the near trade that saw tears run down his face? Wilmer now stands alone with the most walk off RBIs in team history, and at just 26, he hasn’t shown any sign of slowing down.

But is he a winning player? First of all, you can argue he doesn’t have a true position. In spring, he took flyballs in the outfield, but that plan was quickly scrapped. He looks his best at first base, but the Mets have a logjam with Dominic Smith, Peter Alonso and possibly Jay Bruce after a position change.

He’s played second base, shortstop and third, but his defense is suspect, to say the least. Plus, the Mets are covered with Asdrubal Cabrera, Amed Rosario and Todd Frazier, although the first and latter may be dealt before the deadline. There’s also Jeff McNeil tearing it up in AAA, but the Mets’ brass seem to be the only ones who think he’s just a second baseman, although I believe he’ll eventually get his chance.

Being that he can hit lefties and he’s clutch, Wilmer would make for a fine midseason acquisition for a playoff team. Two B-level prospects would probably get it done, and the Mets would clear their logjam. But, if this happens, tears will be shed by both the player and the fans. But let’s get one thing straight. The Mets need to do what’s best for their future beyond 2018. And to be blunt — Wilmer Flores is not a cornerstone piece to build around for years to come.

Should the Mets trade Wilmer Flores?
