While many players in the Mets’ starting lineup are struggling to find their footing during the team’s first “week” of games, Brandon Nimmo is not one of them. In fact, he’s been the most consistent bat among them all.
Nimmo had his second three-hit game of the season during yesterday’s game two of the doubleheader, in which the Mets swept. Nimmo lined a two-run single with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to extend the Mets’ lead and added another run with a sixth-inning RBI knock. Nimmo reached in five of his eight plate appearances in today’s doubleheader. He owns a .581 OBP through the Mets’ first seven games of the season.
Obviously these numbers are impossible to sustain, but as Ron Darling astutely mentioned during yesterday’s broadcast, the Mets were actively looking to replace Nimmo during the offseason. I think everyone expected the Universal DH to be in play, but that didn’t come to be, at least for 2021. If the Mets had signed George Springer or Jackie Bradley Jr., Nimmo would have been relegated into a part-time role. That didn’t come to be, and that could have lit a fire in the Mets’ centerfielder.
