Aches and Pains Better Subside to Compete

on

David Wright is just one of many Mets who have missed time early in the spring, and the team’s early record reflects that.

I am not one to go crazy over a spring training record, but these players need to get healthy with so many questions surrounding the team for the upcoming season. I know the stories of guys like hometown boy Mike Baxter and former pitcher Adam Loewen make you feel good, but these are not guys that should be playing every day.

I wouldn’t love the gamble associated with giving these guys extra playing time. Maybe Fred Wilpon knows. Once again, it seems like he gets away easy in the whole Bernie Madoff saga. He will continue to remain at the helm, which means the light at the end of the tunnel is not getting any closer for the time being.

Back to the players. I am really concerned about the lack of depth on this team. Let’s take shortstop for example. Ronny Cedeno and then who? How about center field? Andres Torres and then who? There’s not many starting pitchers in the minors, so that’s why we may get an early look at Matt Harvey. I just hope the Mets don’t treat him like Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes and mess with the kid’s head. He has the potential to be a pretty good arm down the line.

The Mets need to stock up on depth. I’d imagine they might sign a couple of guys who don’t make teams around the league. For me, depth is not about signing a guy like C.J. Nitkowski. It’s more about being prepared for any situation.

Thoughts?
