Do or do not…
Too much Bryce Harper and too few Mets runs led to another heartache in extra innings tonight as the Mets gave up 6 runs in the 10th inning. Handed their 9th loss out of 10 games since the All-Star break, things are looking pretty bleak right now. I have faith though that they will turn this around though. Do their playoff hopes look as shiny as before, no, but I’m not giving up on them just yet.
Solo home runs by Ike Davis and David Wright may have given the Mets a small morale boost down the stretch, but when the 9th inning rolled around and neither Andres Torres nor Jason Bay could bring Daniel Murphy home from 2nd with only 1 out, we knew we were in for another rough night.
Chris Young seemed to have had an opposite night, and after a shaky 1st inning he pitched really well until he was taken out in the 7th. He retired 18 of 19 batters, struck out 7 and walked 3 on the night. It was actually his best start so far this season. Both he and Nationals’ starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann would receive no-decisions tonight. Zimmermann went 6 innings, struck out 6, allowed 4 hits and no walks.
On a bright note, Mets’ pitching prospect Matt Harvey arrived at CitiField today and is settling in to make his MLB debut on Thursday in Arizona against the Diamondbacks. I realize we can’t expect him to be the savior of the Mets season, but it will be nice to see what he’s got and also to see a fresh face out there for the Mets, and one that we hope will give us something to look forward to in the future.
Turning Point
Sadly, when Ruben Tejada dropped the ball at 2nd (Bernardina slide notwithstanding), and what should have been a 2-out, no one on base turned into 6 runs.
Moment(s) of Note
Mudpie Murphy sliding into 2nd base in the rain, coming up with the entire right side of his uniform caked in mud.
Tim Byrdak kissing Matt Harvey during his pre-game interview. Too funny.
Game Ball
Ike Davis for his game-tying home run and excellent defensive play tonight.
Next Game
Our savior R.A. Dickey (13-1, 2.84 ERA) will take the mound tomorrow against Gio Gonzalez (12-5, 3.32 ERA) in a rematch of last week, in game 2 of this 3-game series between the Mets and Nats. First pitch at 7:10 pm EST. The game can be seen on SNY and heard on WFAN660 AM. @MetsWFAN @dailystache @Meriwyn
