15-8 is a very solid April no matter how you slice it.
Even if it ended on a sour 2-5 note, almost any met fan will take the record and run with it. If there’s one thing the mets should NOT do is start making trades and messing with what’s working. Granted the defense up the middle might have cost them a game or two, or even three, but every piece of this 15-8 puzzle is important.
As the years have gone GM Sandy Alderson has let the farm system run its course as well as make a few key veteran for prospect swaps that have helped the Mets in having plenty of help down on the farm.
“Trade for Jean Segura.” No! For so many reasons, first being the fact that he just wasn’t good at all last year and is in my opinion a downgrade at the plate from current shortstop Wilmer Flores. Granted his defense has been porous early but you gotta give him a chance.
Secondly, the Mets have a GREAT middle infield in Vegas (their AAA team) with both Matt Reynolds and Dilison Herrera (UPDATED: being called up) ready for the call up if middle infield defense really become a problem.
Why give up prospects for a guy who is a slight improvement from the current guy, at a position that is well covered in the farm system?
“Trade Dillion Gee, because he had one good start and this is probably our best chance.” Again NO! Firstly, there is a reason Gee wasn’t traded before the season and it’s not because he wasn’t shopped around. Clearly after doing MUCH shopping Sandy couldn’t find a taker. Dillion has been pretty sub par through four starts. His value has not gone up its only gone down.
Any Met fan knows if theirs one team every met team has is injuries and starting pitchers are very prone to them. Zach Wheeler went down already for the season, Rafael Montero was placed on the DL today so you never know.
Just because there are higher expectations doesn’t mean there has to be panic so early in the season.
