New York Mets third baseman David Wright is confident his team can bounce back from three “ugly” years and enjoy success in 2014.
Wright signed an eight-year contract extension last December after Mets general manager Sandy Alderson convinced him the team would be a force in the National League from 2014.
Alderson assured Wright the Mets would make strides in the 2013 off-season and although they have been slow movers at the start of the hot stove season, Wright believes he is a man of his word and will soon be giving Unibet betting fans something to be attracted to.
“I’m expecting us to field a much better team than we have in years past,” Wright said on WFAN Monday.
“I want to make this team better. Sandy wants that also. Now it’s a matter of balance between going out and spending money, making trades and trying to keep the pitching we’ve talked about in the organization.”
The Mets have more money to spend this off-season after offloading high-earners Johan Santana and Jason Bay but have found the salary expectations of free agents to be “steep”.
“Obviously for us, the off-season has started out somewhat slow,” said Wright. “We signed Chris Young but I think things start heating up come winter meetings.”
Those meetings will mark 12 months since Wright extended his stay with the Mets. He is optimistic Alderson’s rebuilding plan will get the Mets back into the playoffs.
“I am not here to sugar-coat anything. The past three years have been ugly,” added Wright. “I want to be part of those main reasons why we get things turned around here.”
The only time Wright has come close to success with the Mets was back in 2006, when they went within a couple of runs of going to the World Series. All Mets fans will be hoping Wright’s loyalty is rewarded.
