75) Teddy Stankiewicz, RHP, Fort Worth Christian School (TX) – 6-4, 220 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Contact pitcher who throws his fastball between 90-93 MPH who is currently committed to Arkansas. Pitched to a 12-2 record with a 1.35 ERA this season as a high school senior, while holding opponents to a meager .188 batting average against.

Round 3

Matt Koch

107) Matthew Koch, RHP, Louisville, 6-3, 204 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Took the field in 22 games for the Cardinals this season pitching 32 1/3 innings with eight walks and 30 strikeouts and a 3.34 ERA while earning four saves. He will likely stay out of the bullpen which would allow him to move up to the majors sooner, if the Mets want to make him a starter, he will take a little more time.

Round 4

140) Brandon Kaupe, SS, Baldwin High School (HI), 5-7, 175 lbs.

Hit .511 his senior season going 23-for-45 as a switch hitter with 16 steals. He also pitched his senior year but will be a middle infielder at either shortstop or 2nd base.

Round 5

170) Brandon Welch, RHP, Palm Beach CC (FL), 6-1, 185 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: He threw 78 innings in 11 games this season while going 4-3 with a 3.23 ERA. He has struck out 79 batters which gives him a 1.01 K/INN. His walks are also way down as he has only walked 18 batters, his size at 6-1 sets him up more in a reliever role going forward.

Round 6

200) Jayce Boyd, 1B, Florida State, 6-3, 200 lbs.

Jayce Boyd

  • 2012 Stats: Led the Atlantic Coast Conference in hitting with a .390 batting average, a contact hitter who doesn’t have too much power so may be moved to a different position as he only had three home runs in 60 games. Boyd led the Seminoles with 57 RBI, and he struck out only 22 times in 231 at bats so he’s got a pretty good eye at the plate.

Round 7

230) Corey Oswalt, RHP, Madison High School (CA), 6-4, 200 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Committed to UC-Santa Barbara after pitching to a 4-0 record with a 2.16 ERA in 35 2/3 innings pitched as a senior. Walk to Strikeouts are 13/44, not too shabby. During his junior year in high school as an infielder he hit .541 with four homers and 25 RBI, but he will focus on his pitching now with the Mets should he sign.

Round 8

Tomas Nido

260) Tomas Nido, C, Orangewood Christian High School (FL), 6-0, 200 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: A lot of raw power, and will have some pop in his bat, he’s got a strong arm and is currently committed to Florida State University a solid baseball program. He hit .482 as a high school senior this year after moving from Puerto Rico two years ago, he had seven home runs with 31 RBI this season.

Round 9

290) Richie Rodriguez, 2B, Eastern Kentucky, 5-10, 180 lbs.

Richie Rodriguez

  • 2012 Stats: Led the Colonels with a .377 batting average while playing and starting in all 54 games for Eastern Kentucky. He also tied for the team lead in both home runs and RBI with 14 and 46 in both categories respectively, he had 17 errors in the field in 275 chances so he needs to work on his defense just a little bit, but he did have 12 stolen bases and scored 59 runs so theres some speed as well.

Round 10

320) Paul Sewald, RHP, San Diego, 6-2, 190 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Pitched to a career best eight wins and 3.09 ERA during his final season with the San Diego Toreros. Appeared in 15 games, making 14 starts while throwing 84 1/3 innings and holding opponents to a .234 batting average against. Really came on strong as an upper clansman after having an ERA in the mid-9s after two seasons at San Diego, hopefully that trend continues in the coming seasons.

Round 11

350) Logan Taylor, RHP, Eastern Oklahoma Junior Coll., 6-5, 242 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Eastern Oklahoma finished one win shy of winning the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). Round 12

380) Rob Whalen, RHP, Haines City High School (FL), 6-2, 200 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Committed to Florida Atlantic University after putting together a 3-5 record as a junior and striking out 74 hitters in 52 1/3 innings as a junior in high school. Unfortunately I was unable to find information on his senior season but I will further investigate and try to find more.

Round 13

Matt Bowman

410) Matt Bowman, RHP, Princeton, 6-0, 165 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Bowman is a right-handed pitcher who has also played some infield during his time with the Ivy League Tigers. On the mound Bowman pitched to a 4.66 ERA while throwing 56 innings and earning a 4-2 record, he struck out 58 batters while walking 17. At the plate he also played well hitting .308 with one home run and 15 RBI while scoring 26 runs, but he’ll be putting the bat in the closet as he was drafted as a pitcher.

Round 14

440) Chris Flexen, RHP, Newark Memorial High School (CA), 6-3, 215 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Pitch to a 0.44 ERA (yes 0.44 ERA) over 80 innings at Newark Memorial in California this past season. He struck out 125 while walking 19 pitching to seven shutouts in his 11 starts this year. At the plate he wasn’t too bad either with a .368 average with two home runs and 17 RBI.

Round 15

470) Nick Grant, RHP, Milford High School (DE), 6-1, 206 lbs.

  • 2012 Stats: Finished the season with a 3-3 record at Milford High School in Delaware, he suffered his third loss of the season in the State Championship game on May 28 against St. Mark’s in the DIAA Title game. Milford was committed to go to Liberty University which is yet another baseball powerhouse at the collegiate level. He came into the draft as the second ranked player out of the state of Delaware amongst high school players and became the last pick by the Mets on Day 2 of the MLB Draft.

We’ll be back tomorrow to conclude the Daily Stache’s coverage of the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft beginning at 12 p.m. tomorrow. Rounds 16-40 will be conducted tomorrow in the final day of the draft in 2012 with the Mets first pick coming at #500.
