No, dont worry, we arent leaving….again….this time, we are saying good bye to the inspiration behind the name of this blog, we are saying good bye to a legendary piece of facial hair that nobody will ever forget.

Keith Barlow Hernandez has decided that the Mustache he has worn proudly for so many years will be shaved prior to the Mets final home game next Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Here are the details from Newsday’s Neil Best

Keith Hernandez’s mustache, which in 2007 was voted the American Mustache Institute’s greatest sports mustache of all time and earlier the same year won Newsday’s “Mustache Madness” contest, will be shaved off before the Mets ‘ final home game Sept. 27.

The event, open to the public and scheduled for approximately 11:45 a.m. in the plaza outside Citi Field , will be sponsored by Schick Hydro, with proceeds benefiting the Jacqueline Hernandez Adult Day Center in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill . It is named for Hernandez’s mother.

The SNY analyst has let his mustache go gray this season after the expiration of a promotional relationship with Just For Men, a hair coloring product.

He had been thinking about shaving it altogether and decided to make the event public when advised it could raise money for the center.

SNY plans to show highlights during that afternoon’s Mets game.

When Mike Ganci and I were trying to come up with a name for this blog, I came up with The Daily Stache because we both loved Keith Hernandez and it was a pretty clever name if you ask me.

As noted above by Neil Best, who is a great reporter and overall nice guy, this is going to be for Charity, as the proceeds from this event will benefit the Adult Day Center named after his Mother.

This is truly a sad day for Mets fans and fans of Keith Hernandez in general, I thought he was only kidding when he brought up the possibility last month of shaving the stache, but alas it has come true.

I know that this is for charity, which in truth, makes this a wonderful occasion and very worth while, but selfishly I will miss the stache and the power that it had.

But do not fear my friends, for a the wise Cosmo Kramer once told his neighbor Jerry Seinfeld. I will grow back thicker and fuller!

I for one hope in spring training, that comes true for Keith and fans of his stache.
