As we anxiously await the corresponding move that goes along with Michael Cuddyer’s activation, it has dawned on me that Michael Conforto going to Triple-A is probably what’s best for all parties involved.
I am not one who often defends Terry Collins, but he has some valid points against his remaining with the team. First of all, if Cuddyer doesn’t prove healthy, Conforto can be summoned back immediately. Injuries eliminate the mandatory 10-day in the minors rule once you’re optioned down. Also, Conforto needs to be playing every day. He’s not a bench piece, and he needs to continue fine-tuning his hitting approach, even if that means being in Las Vegas until Sept. 1.
Also, it’s Aug. 10, which means in three weeks, he’d be back when rosters expand. If management ultimately decides it’s to the detriment of the team to send him down, then he must stay here. But if he’s being kept around to play two or three games a week, he’s no more valuable than Kelly Johnson would be doing the same.
