News just broke that Jenrry Mejia, who was slated to get the first shot at closing duties for the Mets this year, has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball.
He allegedly ingested the banned substance Stanozolol, which is the same substance that led to Ervin Santana allegedly took. This is another serious punch in the stomach for an already fragile Mets bullpen.
Here is Mejia’s statement on the suspension, courtesy of ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin:
With Josh Edgin gone for the season, Mejia now gone for the first half and Bobby Parnell making his way back from surgery, maybe it’s time to add another guy to the mix. I have never been in favor of bringing up a guy like Steven Matz or Noah Syndergaard for the bullpen, so I am not sure that the answer comes from inside the organization.
When I first asked about Rafael Soriano, who still remains a free agent, I was met with some scrutiny, but one can’t deny that he has history in New York, and he knows how to perform on the center stage. Detractors will say he crumbled last season, and they’d be right, but a one-year deal with incentives wouldn’t break the bank. Who knows? Maybe there’s some talent left there.
There’s also the trade market, but I find it hard to believe that teams will be looking to trade away quality bullpen arms this early, especially since nobody is out of contention.
