Recently DFA’d second baseman Joe Panik, a longtime San Francisco Giant, is soon to be on the market, and the Mets are interested in adding him, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.
Mets have preliminary interest in Joe Panik. It’s unlikely they would claim him off waivers and assume his remaining salary, but if he clears and is released by the Giants on Friday, I am told there is a good chance the Mets will be involved.

It’s been a bad year for Panik, who’s accumulated a -.4 WAR this season, as he’s batted just .235 with a .310 OBP. But he has a proven track record, and as recently as 2017, he hit .288 with a .347 OBP, and he amassed 28 doubles.
For the league minimum, and to provide an obvious offensive upgrade from Luis Guillorme, this seems like a no-brainer. Panik attended John Jay High School in Hopewell Junction, and he went to college at St. John’s University.
Come home Joe…and you’ll finally be where you belong…in Panik City!
