As I drove in to the office this morning, Boomer and Carton was my listen of choice, and it was quite the interesting conversation to say the least.
While discussion should have revolved around the Rangers and their clinching of the President’s Trophy in the NHL last night, the major topic of discussion was whether or not Sandy Alderson was responsible for crafting the opening day lineup as opposed to Mets manager Terry Collins. While Craig Carton aimlessly wandered around the internet looking for sources, he mentioned Newsday’s Marc Carig and ESPN’s Adam Rubin as guys who mentioned the story, and he also mentioned Ed Coleman, the Mets beat reporter for WFAN.
Then, Carton found the story on Metsblog, which was relayed by Matt Cerrone, the creator of the site who’s been running things for 10 years. Now, I have all the respect in the world for Matt and how he keeps the angle of being a fan first. Sure, he now has a partnership with SNY, which is owned by the Mets, but he continues to produce quality content that I return to the site multiple times per day to check out.
Esiason clearly had no idea who ran Metsblog or what its purpose was, and I am sure he probably has never visited it. He said, because the Mets own SNY, that Cerrone is likely a “mouthpiece for the Mets”, as if he just posts whatever they want him to. Cerrone was aggravated by the whole situation, and he called in and was put on air to clear the air. He said he stays out of contact with Mets personnel, because he wants to maintain the vantage point of a fan. He said he simply posed a question in response to Carig’s story, as Metsblog commenters often go on a tangent with subjects like this.
Good for Cerrone calling in and clearing his name. It was silly and ignorant of Esiason to assume Cerrone was just a yes man for the authority, so to speak. As for his hunch, Cerrone told Boomer and Carton that he thinks Sandy made the lineup, but if it works, then it’s not a big deal.
I couldn’t agree more.
