Since the #MetsTwitter draft is only hours away, it is time to meet some of the potential draftees. Much like a real MLB draft, I briefly interviewed several draft candidates in preparation for tonight. The following twitter users participated in the pre draft interviews: @Josh_Batelli, @WhutYearIsIt, @laurakosiex321, @fromheretoLI, @ludichrisspeed, @KnicksMemes, and @RichMacLeod. All are great Mets fans that are absolutely worth following. Here are the questions I asked them, and their responses follow:
Why do you believe you should be drafted, and where do you see yourself realistically going in the draft?
If you are drafted, what is the best thing you could bring to your respective team?
If you had to suggest a tweeter other than yourself that deserves consideration, Who would it be and why?
@Josh_Batelli: I think I should be drafted because I bring a lot to the table. I think I’m a 5 tool player in many ways. I enjoy tweeting interesting statistics, love interacting with other fans, and have been told I’m funny. I guess that’s only 3 tools but nevertheless. I love tweeting with others while the Mets are winning and enjoy it too while suffering through the losing streaks. Whether they are winning or losing, I’m here and I’ll always be here.
As far as where I realistically see myself going in the draft, I really don’t know. It depends on how much Matt or Jon value me. I could see myself going in the middle/end or not at all. Not being drafted wouldn’t bother me because I know they both have a ton of people to choose from for such a small amount of spots. There are literally hundreds of great tweeters in #MetsTwitter and it’d be an honor just to be on their minds during the draft process.
If drafted, there’s a lot I can bring to the team. I led little league one season in home runs when I was 12, so there’s that. But in terms of Twitterability (it’s a word, I swear.) I think I bring a lighthearted approach to Mets baseball. If you’re too emotionally invested in what they’re doing, you’re in for a lot of disappointment. While I love the team and not winning kills me, I’m able to not see losses as the absolute end of the world and can use my humor to aide my own pain and help others during incomprehensible losses.
I have to pick two tweeters who deserve to be drafted. @_mistermet is all around the best twitter account on #MetsTwitter. From the Retweet Vault, to his sarcastic humor, to the Mark Teixeira horse jokes, he’s got it all. And I can’t forget either how he has an incredible knowledge of baseball, past and current Mets history, and a great sense of the minor leagues. Another account that deserves to be drafted is @MetsKevin11. For a long time I’ve thought Kevin should be hired by a big TV company or team for something. He gives us instant GIFs, great pictures, and hilarious memes. He’s got a future in some sort of capacity. He’s gonna blow up on Twitter one day and the masses will see his great work (although, “Intertouchdownception” fans have already seen it.)
@RichMacLeod: The big thing with Twitter these days seems to be that people are measured on how many followers they have. To me, that’s a total bullshit argument. You can have 15K people following you but if you’re not interacting and making connections than it’s totally useless. I’ve created a strong, albeit not very large, following over the past year that I interact with constantly and I think they would be the ones more qualified to say why I should or shouldn’t be picked.
As some of you may know I’m close with people at SNY & MetsBlog because of the work that I’ve done there. If there were ever a pair of people that I could nominate, it would have be @matthewcerrone & @michaelgbaron, two people that are great at what they do, awesome with the fans, and two good friends as well.
@fromheretoLI: Hello my fellow #MetsTwitter Brethren, my name is Kevin O and I am a #MetsTwitterDraftee hopeful. An MBA student who hopes to one day run his own Brew Pub (if you wear Mets apparel, first round is on me!), I bring intelligence, wit, humor, and a fuck you attitude to the table. The mock draft had me going 43rd overall and I’d say that is a fair assessment. There are many others out there and they are definitely more deserving.
If I am to be drafted, I believe my top attribute would be my defense. I have been called “The White Knight” (seriously) as I stand up for numerous fans and more importantly, friends. There are too many o’ mong out there running rampant now that good ol’ @JedSmed has retired from Twitter. I consider myself to be a part of what is left of the Golden Age of #MetsTwitter.
@laurakosiex321: I believe I should be drafted because I love participating in #MetsTwitter and it would be an honor to be recognized as one of the “best of the best”. Wherever I am drafted, I hope to utilize my sense of humor. We all know that being a Mets fan can be tough sometimes, and the best way to get through it is to laugh. But to be honest, I’m not sure if I see myself being drafted!! There are so many other great #MetsTwitter people that I follow (and even more that I don’t!) @mezzanine76 has made a fantastic push in the last week with his #HasLobby campaign (#HasLobbyLineArmy 4 lyfe, IMO). I’m sure @MetsKevin11 will be picked early in the draft because of his awesome GIF/image making skills. I have to give a shout out to Shannon (@Miss_Met) too. She is so knowledgeable and passionate about this team, the definition of a true fan.
@KnicksMemes: I believe I should be drafted for a few reasons. Obviously I am a Mets fan, but so is everybody else, so let’s go on. For one, I am quite funny, and run a Knicks Comedy page which has quickly become the largest Knicks FAN page on Facebook . Most of my comedy comes in the form of Memes, and I also run a Mets Meme page so my memes and comedy DO translate to baseball. I watch every game, and am active on social media. I am also a good writer, know a TON about baseball (especially weird, crazy moments or stats), and am quite creative. I feel like I would definitely be a useful asset to a team.
@WhutYearIsIt: I think I should I be drafted because I believe I am very witty and out of the box with my tweets; plus my fan reactions are something that everybody enjoys and it’s something unique to me that nobody else does. I can see myself going in a later round. If I am drafted, my most valuable thing will be the fan reactions, because as I said before, it’s something unique to me that nobody else can do, plus it is enjoyed by everyone. I would suggest @hotcoffeelawsut because he is a very under appreciated person on twitter. He is very witty, comes up with great puns and could be a very good addition.
@ludichrisspeed: I contribute any success I’ve had to the rest of the Mets tweeters out there. We’re a team and we’re in this together. That said, I don’t think I should drop anywhere below the second pick. If drafted, I can bring nonsense. Every good team needs a Roger McDowell dishing out 140 character hot foots. I would recommend @LaTroyHawkins32. He, with one fell tweet, caused a deserving idiot on Twitter to lose 400 followers. Clear display of hasing lobby. Also, choosing him means I do not alienate the many wonderful tweeters of #MetsTwitter that deserve consideration.
