Reports surfaced Thursday saying that David Wright will be ready for opening day.
Good news right? Not if he’s not playing at 100 percent. We’re coming off an offseason in which the Mets’ just openly stated that they’re building around David Wright. He’s the franchise player, and the Mets need to be cautious, especially seeing as though they’re not likely to be divisional contenders in 2013 anyway.
From the Daily News:
As both players continue receiving treatment, manager Terry Collins remains confident Wright will be his Opening Day third baseman. Collins said he is less optimistic about Murphy, who still hasn’t started taking at-bats after sustaining the injury early in camp. The manager divulged Murphy’s rib cage strain is more severe than Wright’s.
There’s no reason for rush. If he has to miss a week or two, then so be it. That’s why you have guys like Omar Quintanilla and Justin Turner. You can also keep a Brandon Hicks with the big league team as a backup if needed.
The bottom line? What’s the rush? I would be more comfortable knowing he’s 100 percent than if he’s playing with pain.
