According to Jon Heyman of FanRag, Yoenis Cespedes will indeed opt out of the remaining years on his contract with the Mets and will become a free agent, which is hardly a shocker considering the weak free agent class.
Cespedes will join a market of players that includes Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Mark Trumbo. Unlike last off-season, I am fairly confident that Cespedes returns, because the Mets are just simply a different animal with him in the fold.
From Heyman:The sides (Mets and Cespedes) have had what’s been described as an “open dialogue,” so team officials aren’t unaware of Cespedes’ plans, not that they couldn’t have assumed them, anyway. It’s similar to last year, when star Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke opted out with $77 million guaranteed and three years to go on his L.A. deal (Greinke turned it into a $206.5 million, six-year Diamondbacks deal).
