Pain in the *Asterisk: Cardinals 5, Mets 4

on

OK St. Louis, there’s your payback for Johan Santana’s no-no.  Now we’re even.

The Mets clawed their way back from a 4-0 deficit to lose 5-4 against a Cardinals team that admittedly (by them) isn’t at their best right now.  The old RISP bug reared it’s ugly head today as the Mets went 0-for-7 today in that category, and it turned out to be the difference in the game.  That and Bobby Parnell giving up one stinking run in the 7th.  Truth be told, that was probably the biggest comeback killer of all.  Even with that craptastic call at 1st base, we’d be in extra innings right now at the very least, especially with Cardinals’ closer Jason Motte running out of gas after having to get 5 outs.

Kelly Shoppach and Daniel Murphy were the big stories today on offense, each of them with a 2-run home run that pulled the Mets within 1 run ultimately.

Collin McHugh didn’t have a great day, going only 4 innings and giving up 4 runs, 6 hits and struck out only 2 this time around.

Another thing that is really bothering me is the non-existent hitting of David Wright.  What happened?  I agree with most of the media and Keith when they say he’s taking to big of an uppercut swing now, but MAN.  Hopefully he gets it together again soon.  He could have really helped today.

Turning Point

That f***ing call which essentially killed the Mets’ momentum.

Moment(s) of Note

A feisty Daniel Murphy yelling at the umpires after the game was over.  Goodwin had to actually go and steer him towards the dugout.

Add to that an equally feisty Terry Collins who, along with the entire dugout, refused to leave after the game and threw a few “sweet nothings” at the ump crew himself.

Andres Torres did his best Jason Bay impression today, crashing into the CF wall after making a spectacular catch.  He came up grimacing over his right knee, but hung in there like a champ.  He also took a knock to the head when he careened into Skip Schumaker’s knee sliding into 2nd in the 9th.

A call that DID go the Mets way…Ike Davis was called safe after his non-hustle and non-slide back to 2nd base when it looked like it could have gone either way.  Clean it up, Ike.

Game Ball

Andres Torres, who played his heart out on both offense and defense today, and who DID in fact touch 1st base.

Next Game

Matt Harvey (3-3, 2.76 ERA) will take the mound tomorrow in one of his final two starts before being shut down, and will go against Jaime Garcia (3-6, 4.52 ERA) in game 2 of this 3-game series between the Mets and Cardinals.  First pitch at 8:10 pm EST.  The game can be seen on SNY and heard on WFAN660 AM. @MetsWFAN @dailystache @Meriwyn

Let’s go METS!!
