The Mets defeated the Cardinals by a score of 5-0 this afternoon at clinch a series split at worst. RA Dickey followed up Johan Santana’s no hitter nicely by pitching a complete game, 7 hit shutout of his own.
Like his previous two starts, Dickey’s knuckle ball was dancing today, as he recorded 9 strikeouts. Additionally, Dickey was in complete control, throwing 73 percent of his pitches for strikes and walking none. It is amazing how in control Dickey has been of his knuckle ball lately.
On offense, the Mets scored 3 runs in the 2nd behind some poor defense by the Cardinals. All three runs were scored on ground balls. In the 7th, Daniel Murphy scored on a wild pitch with Dickey at the plate. The Mets fifth and final run came in the 8th as David Wright his a solo home run. Wright, Thole, and Murphy all had two hits a piece today.
Another player who impressed me today was Omar Quintanilla. He made some nice plays on defense, and held his own at the plate. Since being recalled, he has adequately filled in at SS.
This game was the Mets 30th win of the season, and it pushed them to 7 games over .500 for the first time this season. The NL East is a 5 horse race right now, as every team is at least 3 games over .500.
The probable pitchers over he next couple days are up in the air, but one thing we know for sure is that Jonathan Niese will pitch tomorrow night against Jake Westbrook. The Mets are on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball for the first time season.
First pitch is officially slated for 8:05 pm EST tomorrow as the Mets look to clinch a series win against the defending world champions.
