Post Game: Mets 5 Phillies 0

on

The Mets clinched a series win this afternoon in Philadelphia by shutting out the Phillies by a score of 5-0.

Jonathan Niese was on the hill today, and he pitched brilliantly, tossing 6.2 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5 Phillies.

David Wright returned from injury today, and hit the first pitch he saw to the deepest part of the park for a HR. Wright finished the day 3 for 5 with a walk including his HR.

Other big days at the plate came from Lucas Duda who was 2-4 with a 2 run HR and double, and Ruben Tejada who was 2-5 with an RBI single.

Bobby Parnell and Jon Rauch combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Full box score can be seen here .

Overall this was an extremely important victory for the Mets. Anytime you beat a divisional foe on the road is a big win.  Jon Niese looks like he is living up to his contract extension so far, as he was near perfect today. His curveball was great and he located his fastball and cutter consistently.

I came into the game worried about David Wright’s health status, but those concerns were put to rest when he drilled the first pitch he saw for the HR. This was a great sign moving forward for this team, knowing that Wright is healthy enough to play at a high level.

Game Ball: Goes to Jon Niese for his outstanding performance on the mound today.

The Mets go for the sweep of the Phillies tomorrow at 1:35 EST tomorrow. Mike Pelfrey matches up against Cole Hamels. The game can be seen on SNY and heard on WFAN as usual.
